Sarah Carlson-McNally uses the conjunction of painting and sculpture as an inquiry into the various relations between physical and digital experience. Her work attempts to fossilize her current take on the sometimes blurred boundaries between physical and digital experience. While the artworks are really rugged and raw, they possess a digital undertone. Bits of women from porn clippings, snapshots of animals, and even formal elements like swaths of color or constructed gestures, have often passed through a digital source. Simultaneously, use of the hand is evident throughout the work, and there are flirty, whimsical moments, with an eerie undertone throughout. The representational imagery has a “pulled-from-online” quality, while the indexical is ever present. She is concerned with our tether to technology, and therefore our lack thereof, to the natural world, our natural state of being.
